Illumination has released the official teaser trailer for Not Alone, an original animated sci-fi romantic comedy starring Timothée Chalamet and Selena Gomez.
The film follows Joe, voiced by Chalamet, an introverted rocket mechanic who lives a quiet life alone, and Fran, voiced by Gomez, a brilliant astro-botanist developing the world’s first plant-fueled rocket. When the two are brought together for the rocket’s launch, sparks begin to fly — though neither of them appears particularly equipped for actual romance.
That already gives Not Alone a sweet romantic-comedy base: two clever, socially awkward people trying to build something extraordinary while very clearly not knowing what to do with their own feelings. Then, because this is Illumination, life becomes much louder.
Three tiny alien fugitives — Dunk, Welly and Shirm — take refuge in Joe’s home while running from Officer Zandro, an overzealous and deeply unhelpful intergalactic lawman. The aliens quickly decide that Fran’s rocket may be their only way back home, turning Joe and Fran’s delicate almost-romance into a full cosmic rescue problem.
The teaser seems to lean into a softer, dreamier mood than some of Illumination’s louder franchise films, while still keeping the studio’s familiar taste for adorable chaos. The alien trio already looks designed to cause merchandising, emotional attachment and at least one scene where adults in the cinema pretend they are not charmed.
The voice cast also includes Rob Brydon, Diane Morgan and Jamie Demetriou as the three aliens, Brett Goldstein as Officer Zandro, and Allison Janney and Lamorne Morris in supporting roles. The film is directed by Eric Guillon, Claire Dodgson and Jonathan Del Val, with Chris Meledandri producing.
For fans of animated movies, Not Alone looks like a promising original adventure about loneliness, connection and the strange possibility that your life might improve after aliens crash into your house. Maybe not practically. But emotionally? Possibly.
Not Alone opens in theaters on April 16, 2027.
