Paramount+ has released an official clip from the Season 4 premiere of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, introducing Captain Pike and the crew of the Enterprise to a powerful civilisation from prehistoric Mars.
The scene comes from “Valles Marineris,” an ambitious time-travel episode that sends the Enterprise approximately 65 million years into the past.
After entering a dangerous interstellar storm while responding to a distress signal, the ship is thrown backwards through time and left damaged inside an unexpectedly unfamiliar version of Earth’s solar system.
The Enterprise soon encounters an imposing alien warship commanded by Battle Commander Cassell, played by Saffron Burrows. Although her people come from Mars, they are considerably more technologically advanced than Pike and his crew expected to find anywhere in this period.
Cassell immediately establishes that the encounter is not a peaceful rescue operation. Her forces have attached their ship to the damaged Enterprise and claimed the Starfleet vessel as salvage for their ongoing war.
Captain Pike attempts to prevent the situation from escalating by inviting Cassell aboard the Enterprise. Rather than responding with another display of military strength, he tries to understand the conflict threatening her people and introduce her to the Federation’s principles of cooperation and peaceful coexistence.
Cassell comes from a society shaped by generations of violence. Her people are fighting the Dol’Drm, an insectoid civilisation from another inhabited world, and she is primarily interested in obtaining the Enterprise’s advanced weapons technology.
The encounter creates a familiar but difficult Star Trek dilemma. Pike wants to protect his crew without allowing future technology to fall into the hands of a civilisation from Earth’s distant past. At the same time, refusing to help Cassell could leave her people vulnerable to destruction.
The clip highlights the contrast between the two commanders. Cassell approaches every unknown species as a potential enemy, while Pike continues searching for a diplomatic solution even after his ship has effectively been captured.
Anson Mount returns as Christopher Pike alongside the regular Enterprise crew, while Saffron Burrows makes a memorable guest appearance as the formidable Martian commander.
The episode combines first contact, time travel, prehistoric creatures and a hidden chapter in the history of the solar system. It also places the Enterprise crew in the dangerous position of knowing that even a small decision could permanently alter humanity’s future.
