HBO Max has released the official teaser for Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, a new Big Bang Theory spin-off that finally gives Stuart Bloom his own chaotic adventure.
Kevin Sussman returns as Stuart, the anxious comic book store owner who spent years drifting around the edges of Sheldon, Leonard, Penny and the rest of the gang. This time, however, Stuart is not just a supporting character dropping into someone else’s story. He is the unlucky man at the centre of a universe-breaking crisis.
The premise is wonderfully ridiculous in the best possible way: Stuart accidentally damages a device created by Sheldon and Leonard, triggering a multiverse Armageddon. To fix reality, he sets off on a sci-fi comedy quest with Denise, played by Lauren Lapkus, Bert, played by Brian Posehn, and Barry Kripke, played by John Ross Bowie.
The teaser suggests a much stranger and more ambitious tone than a standard sitcom revival. Instead of simply returning to familiar apartments, cafeteria tables and comic book shop banter, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe seems ready to throw the franchise into alternate realities, genre parody and full comic-book-level chaos. For a character like Stuart, who has always lived halfway between awkward everyday life and superhero fantasy, that actually feels weirdly perfect.
There is also something funny about making Stuart the person responsible for saving existence. He has never exactly radiated “chosen one” energy — which is precisely why the setup works. The comedy comes from placing one of the franchise’s most insecure, unlucky characters inside a crisis that is far too big for him to handle.
For fans of The Big Bang Theory, this series looks like a bold swing rather than a safe nostalgia play. It brings back familiar faces, but it also pushes the franchise into a more surreal sci-fi direction, with the kind of premise Sheldon would probably criticise for seventeen minutes before secretly loving it.
Stuart Fails to Save the Universe premieres on HBO Max on July 23, 2026.
