Kate Wyler has survived international crises, political betrayals and one spectacularly complicated marriage. Season 4 of The Diplomat may finally push her too far.
The new trailer finds President Grace Penn and Vice President Hal Wyler playing a dangerously reckless game after conspiring to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon. With relations between the United States and Britain threatening to collapse, Kate joins forces with an unlikely ally: First Gentleman Todd Penn.
That creates the season’s wonderfully messy central dynamic — Kate and Todd on one side, Grace and Hal on the other, with two marriages becoming almost as volatile as the international crisis around them.
Keri Russell returns alongside Rufus Sewell, Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford, with creator Debora Cahn describing the four characters as two couples effectively trapped together on a crumbling roller coaster. The Diplomat Season 4 premieres October 15 on Netflix.
Thankfully, Russell’s real-life relationship appears considerably less exhausting.
In Variety’s How Well Do Keri Russell & Matthew Rhys Know Each Other?, Russell reunites on camera with her longtime partner and former The Americans co-star Matthew Rhys for a wonderfully chaotic test of just how much they actually remember about each other.
The questions range from their six seasons on The Americans and Russell’s Mickey Mouse Club days to Rhys’ horses and their respective careers. They disagree, laugh, correct each other and generally behave like two people who have known one another long enough to have stopped pretending they know every answer.
And The Diplomat even sneaks into the game.
When asked which season might finally see Kate Wyler become president, Rhys optimistically guesses Season 9. Russell simply turns her board around to reveal: “LET’S WATCH IN OCTOBER.”
Whether Kate ever reaches the Oval Office remains to be seen.
Judging by the Season 4 trailer, she has a few slightly more urgent problems to deal with first.
The Diplomat Season 4 arrives on Netflix October 15, 2026.
