One of last year’s biggest horror sensations was The Spine of the Night, which has been making waves during the awards season, although somewhat unusually, Demi Moore received the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy/Musical category for her role. Since there is no horror category, Margaret Qualley, who also gave a memorable performance in the film, was nominated as a supporting actress among comedy performers. In a recent conversation, she revealed that the filming of The Spine of the Night had a long-lasting effect on her life – specifically, on her facial skin.
The 30-year-old actress plays the perfected and rejuvenated version of Moore’s character in the body horror film, and for certain scenes, she had to wear thick makeup and masks, which her skin did not react well to. In the opening shots, she had to be filmed from below, and she explained, “It’s only because they totally f***ed up my face.” The scene was actually filmed towards the end of the shoot when her skin was in poor condition, covered in pimples.
Despite this, Qualley tries to see the positive side: Shortly after The Spine of the Night finished filming, she moved on to another film released last year, The Different Kinds of Grace directed by Yórgos Lánthimos, where she played four different characters. One of her characters, as it turned out, was supposed to have pimples in the story, so during her scenes, the makeup artists didn’t need to do much work on her face.
“These were my own pimples, which developed because of the masks. I thought it was almost perfect. I get to play all these different characters, and for one of them, we can use these stupid pimples.” Or it took me a year to recover,” the actress recalled. She will soon be seen in Happy, the Crazy Golfer 2 as well as in Ethan Coen and Richard Linklater's upcoming films, Honey Don’t! and Blue Moon.
