The first trailer for Wicker has arrived, introducing Olivia Colman and Alexander Skarsgård as the central couple in one of the year’s most unusual romantic fantasies.
Colman plays a lonely fisherwoman living on the outskirts of a small seaside village. Ridiculed by her neighbours and increasingly tired of their narrow-minded judgement, she decides to take control of her own future by commissioning a husband from the local basketmaker.
Peter Dinklage plays the craftsman responsible for fulfilling her extraordinary request. Rather than finding her a conventional partner, he creates an entire man from wicker — a beautifully constructed figure who unexpectedly comes to life.
Alexander Skarsgård appears beneath an elaborate woven transformation as the Fisherwoman’s new husband. Despite his unusual appearance, the trailer presents him as gentle, loyal and considerably more emotionally available than many of the human men surrounding them.
What begins as an unconventional arrangement soon develops into a passionate and surprisingly tender romance. The Fisherwoman finally discovers companionship with someone who accepts her completely, but her happiness causes outrage among the village’s conservative residents.
The arrival of the Wicker Husband also exposes the hypocrisy and jealousy hiding beneath the community’s respectable surface. While the villagers openly condemn the relationship, they appear increasingly fascinated by the strange newcomer and threatened by the freedom he represents.
Olivia Colman and Alexander Skarsgård lead the film alongside Peter Dinklage and Elizabeth Debicki. The cast also includes Richard E. Grant, Marli Siu and Nabhaan Rizwan.
The film was written and directed by Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson, adapting Ursula Wills-Jones’ short story The Wicker Husband. Their story combines romantic fantasy, folklore, comedy and social satire to explore loneliness, conformity and the disruptive power of refusing to live according to other people’s expectations.
Rather than treating its deliberately bizarre premise as a simple joke, the trailer suggests that Wicker will deliver a sincere love story beneath its eccentric imagery. Its handcrafted fantasy world and central relationship appear designed to be funny, sensual and unexpectedly emotional in equal measure.
Wicker begins its theatrical release on October 23, 2026.
