Will Smith and Michael Bay's cinematic careers received a huge boost from the nearly 30-year-old Bad Boys – which led to a sequel in 2003, eight years later. However, after that, the Oscar-winning actor and the action director, who long shaped the Transformers franchise, went their separate ways. Now, they are set to work together again, as Netflix has chosen Bay to direct Fast and Loose, starring Smith, and negotiations are already well advanced.
Fast and Loose centers around a man who wakes up in Tijuana, Mexico, with no memory of who he is. As he tries to piece together fragments of his past, he discovers that he has lived a double life: as the leader of a criminal organization and an undercover CIA agent. The screenplay was written by Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber, who worked on Red 1-2, The Meg 1-2, and Transformers: The Last Knight; Chris Bremner, co-writer of the Bad Boys 3-4 scripts; and Eric Pearson, known for his work on several MCU projects (Thor: Ragnarok, Black Widow, Thunderbolts), as well as Godzilla vs. Kong and Transformers: The Last Knight.
The action film has been in development at Netflix for years, but after the 2022 Oscars, its realization became uncertain. Although Will Smith won his Oscar for King Richard that year, the event became more memorable for the slap rather than his win. The streaming giant decided to continue development once it was confirmed that Bad Boys 4 would be made (which was released this summer and became a notable success), giving the actor a new chance in Hollywood. Michael Bay, who stepped down from directing Transformers after 2017's The Last Knight, has continued his signature high-octane action style in recent years with Six Underground and Ambulance. It seems that he's now working on multiple projects with Netflix: alongside Fast and Loose, the streaming giant is also planning to adapt the wildly popular Skibidi Toilet for the platform.
