Netflix has released the official trailer for Chris & Martina: The Final Set, a new documentary about two of the most important figures in tennis history: Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova.
For nearly two decades, Evert and Navratilova defined women’s tennis. Their rivalry was not just frequent; it was historic. They faced each other 80 times, including 14 Grand Slam finals, pushing one another toward greatness while shaping the sport around them. Navratilova ultimately led their head-to-head record 43–37, but the numbers only tell part of the story.
The trailer presents that rivalry as both fierce and deeply personal. Evert represented a very different tennis image from Navratilova, whose upbringing in communist Czechoslovakia and later move to the United States gave her career an entirely different cultural and political weight. Their contrast made them fascinating opponents, but the documentary appears just as interested in what happened after the battles ended.
Directed by two-time Emmy Award winner Rebecca Gitlitz, Chris & Martina: The Final Set uses interviews and archival footage to trace how competition slowly became connection. Tribeca describes the film as featuring never-before-seen interviews and footage, with both women reflecting on their parallel journeys to sports stardom, their sacrifices and the bond that grew between them over time.
The emotional centre of the film is their more recent shared experience with cancer. Netflix describes the documentary as exploring their decades-long dominance of women’s tennis and “a friendship even cancer couldn’t upset.” That gives the title a heavier meaning: this is not only about a final set in a sporting sense, but about mortality, resilience and the strange intimacy that can remain between former rivals.
For fans of sports documentaries, this film looks like a strong Netflix release because it is not simply about trophies or famous matches. It is about what rivalry can become when the scoreboard disappears. Evert and Navratilova spent years trying to beat each other, but the trailer suggests that their greatest story may be how they learned to understand each other.
Chris & Martina: The Final Set premieres at the Tribeca Festival on June 10, 2026, before launching on Netflix on June 26.
