More than sixty years later, Hollywood is heading back to Dealey Plaza.
The first trailer for November 1963 has arrived, offering a very different take on one of the most examined events in American history: the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
Rather than following investigators or the Kennedy family, director Roland Joffé’s film places the audience inside the Chicago Outfit during the 48 hours surrounding November 22, 1963.
John Travolta stars as mob figure Johnny Roselli, alongside Robert Carlyle as Jack Ruby, Dermot Mulroney as Chuckie Nicoletti, Mandy Patinkin as Anthony Accardo, Thomas Fiscella as Sam Giancana and Jefferson White as Lee Harvey Oswald.
And the trailer makes the film’s theory very clear.
Its story argues that the Chicago mob believed it had helped John F. Kennedy win the presidency, only to feel betrayed when Attorney General Robert Kennedy intensified the government’s campaign against organised crime.
From there, November 1963 dramatizes the mob’s alleged involvement in the assassination and the frantic attempt to contain the fallout once Kennedy is shot.
The film unfolds in near real time across the crucial 48-hour period, moving between mob figures, Lee Harvey Oswald and Jack Ruby as the situation rapidly spirals out of control.
The screenplay was written by Nicholas Celozzi, a nephew of Chicago Outfit boss Sam Giancana. Celozzi has said the story grew from accounts he heard from his uncle Joseph “Pepe” Giancana, Sam’s brother, when he was young.
That family connection is also what makes November 1963 unusual.
The film isn’t presenting itself as a neutral reconstruction of the Warren Commission record. Instead, it deliberately tells the story from inside the Giancana family’s version of events and dramatizes the claim that organised crime played a direct role in Kennedy’s death.
Whether audiences accept that theory is another question entirely.
But as a crime thriller, the first trailer certainly has the cast for it.
Travolta leans heavily into the old-school mob atmosphere, Carlyle makes an immediately unsettling Jack Ruby, and the film surrounds them with an unusually strong ensemble.
Joffé also went big on the physical recreation of 1963. Production took place in Manitoba, where the filmmakers reconstructed Dealey Plaza and reportedly used around 1,500 extras and more than 75 period vehicles.
For a mystery that has generated conspiracy theories for more than six decades, November 1963 isn’t trying to provide the safe version.
It is choosing a side of the story and walking straight into it.
November 1963 opens in US theaters on November 20, 2026.
