Netflix has released the official trailer for The Secret Woman, a new Danish psychological thriller built around a disturbing question: what happens when someone tells you that your entire identity is a lie?
Natalie Madueño stars as Louise Andersen, a woman living a peaceful life on the Norwegian island of Hidra with her partner, Joachim. Together they have built a quiet existence far removed from the complications of the outside world, with Louise running a small local café.
Everything changes when a stranger suddenly approaches her with an extraordinary claim.
According to him, Louise Andersen does not exist.
He insists that she is actually Helene Söderberg, a Danish woman who mysteriously disappeared three years earlier.
The accusation initially seems impossible, but the stranger knows details that Louise cannot easily dismiss. Even more disturbing is the revelation that Helene had a life Louise remembers nothing about — including a husband and a young son.
Her certainty about who she is begins to collapse.
Unable to ignore the possibility that the stranger may be telling the truth, Louise leaves Joachim and travels back to Denmark in search of answers. There she attempts to reconnect with the people who insist they knew her as Helene and begins investigating what happened on the night she disappeared.
Every discovery creates another contradiction.
Memories do not align with the stories she is being told, people from Helene’s former life appear to be hiding information and Louise becomes increasingly unsure whom she can trust.
Natalie Madueño leads the film alongside Claes Bang and Pål Sverre Hagen, with Stina Ekblad, Ingrid Bolsø Berdal and Lars Simonsen also appearing in the ensemble.
The film reunites members of the creative team behind Netflix’s Danish thriller Loving Adults. Barbara Topsøe-Rothenborg directs and co-wrote the screenplay with Anders August.
The Secret Woman is based on Anna Ekberg’s novel of the same name and uses its identity mystery to explore memory, relationships and the terrifying possibility that the people closest to us may know versions of our lives that we no longer recognise.
The trailer carefully avoids revealing whether Louise truly is Helene or why she may have abandoned — or forgotten — her previous existence. Instead, it builds its suspense around conflicting versions of the same woman and the growing suspicion that discovering the truth could be more dangerous than continuing to live without it.
What begins as an identity mystery gradually develops into something darker as Louise investigates the circumstances surrounding Helene’s disappearance and uncovers a secret capable of overturning everything she believes about herself.
The Secret Woman premieres globally on Netflix on August 28, 2026.
