Netflix has released an extended sneak peek at Alley Cats, Ricky Gervais’ new adult animated comedy about a dysfunctional group of foul-mouthed British feral cats attempting to survive life on the streets.
Created, directed by and starring Gervais, the series follows cats from different corners of British society as they search for food, companionship and occasional meaning in a world controlled by largely indifferent humans.
The new footage offers an early taste of the show’s deliberately slow, conversational style. Rather than relying entirely on frantic cartoon action, the characters spend their time arguing, insulting one another and discussing subjects far larger than their immediate circumstances.
Their conversations move between everyday frustrations and surprisingly philosophical questions about life, death, relationships and happiness. The result combines animal behaviour with recognisably human insecurities, allowing the cats to become exaggerated reflections of the people living around them.
Gervais voices one member of the central group and brings the same confrontational, opinionated comic persona found throughout much of his previous work. However, beneath the insults and cynicism, the series also appears interested in loneliness and the companionship these apparently selfish animals provide for one another.
The voice cast reunites Gervais with several performers from his earlier television projects. Tom Basden, Andrew Brooke, David Earl, Kerry Godliman, Jo Hartley and Diane Morgan all lend their voices to the series, with Natalie Cassidy and Tony Way also featured.
The animation is produced by Blink Industries, with Elliot Dear serving as co-director. Its hand-crafted visual style gives the cats expressive human characteristics while retaining the scruffy physical appearance of animals accustomed to surviving outside.
Despite its colourful presentation and animal protagonists, Alley Cats is firmly intended for adult audiences. The language, cynical observations and irreverent humour place it closer to an animated British sitcom than a conventional family cartoon.
The series also continues Gervais’ interest in characters who hide vulnerability beneath hostility and sarcasm. Its feral cats may behave terribly, but their need for affection, friendship and acceptance remains difficult to conceal.
Alley Cats premieres globally on Netflix on August 7, 2026.
