Disney+ has released the couch gag for The Simpsons Extreme Makeover: Homer Edition, and Springfield has rarely looked this strange.
The new opening sequence is tied to the Disney+ exclusive special, which gives Homer and Marge’s world a surreal makeover with help from immersive art collective Meow Wolf. That is a wonderfully odd fit for The Simpsons, a show that has spent decades turning its couch gag into a tiny experimental playground for animators, artists and cultural weirdos with extremely specific ideas.
This time, the couch gag does not just remix the family’s usual sprint to the living room. It breaks Springfield open into something stranger, more handmade and more dreamlike. Meow Wolf’s influence brings an installation-art sensibility to the sequence, turning familiar Simpsons imagery into a playful, trippy, collage-like journey through colour, absurdity and visual chaos.
That kind of outside collaboration has long been one of the couch gag’s best tricks. Over the years, The Simpsons has used the opening sequence as a miniature short film, letting guest artists bend the show’s visual language without needing to reshape a whole episode. The result can be funny, disturbing, beautiful or completely unhinged — sometimes all in under two minutes.
Extreme Makeover: Homer Edition appears to lean into that tradition by making the couch gag feel like an event in itself. Rather than a throwaway intro, it becomes a little art-piece at the front door of the episode, setting the tone for a special that plays with alternate versions, fantasy and the long-running weirdness of Homer Simpson as a character.
For fans of animated series, this clip is a fun reminder that The Simpsons can still surprise when it lets other creative voices loose inside its world. The family may still end up near the couch, but the journey there is now full of Omega Mart-style oddness, recycled-art energy and enough visual nonsense to make Homer’s “Mmm…” feel genuinely earned.
The Simpsons Extreme Makeover: Homer Edition is streaming on Disney+ from June 17, 2026.
