Joe Keery has experienced plenty of unexpected moments on screen, but a recent Broadway performance delivered a surprise that nobody saw coming.

Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the Stranger Things actor recalled a bizarre bathroom-related incident involving an audience member during a performance of Other Desert Cities.

The unusual interruption became the centrepiece of an entertaining conversation about Keery's transition from television and music into the world of Broadway.

Keery, who also performs under the musical name Djo, discussed the challenges of balancing his touring schedule with the demanding preparation required for a theatrical production.

Unlike working on a television series, performing on stage requires actors to deliver their dialogue continuously in front of a live audience, leaving little room for mistakes or unexpected distractions.

Keery explained how he practised his lines while travelling on tour, preparing to join a cast that includes Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Allison Janney and Lily Rabe.

The conversation also took him back to his school years, when he performed in a production of Dangerous Liaisons, long before becoming internationally recognised as Steve Harrington in Netflix's Stranger Things.

His Broadway appearance represents another step in a career that has increasingly expanded beyond the role that made him famous, encompassing independent films, music and live theatre.

Between the unusual audience incident and his experiences learning lines on the road, Keery's latest interview reveals some of the unpredictable realities of performing for a live crowd.
