Lanterns Finale Lets John Stewart Choose His Own Path

Becoming a Green Lantern was never really about putting on the ring. For John Stewart, it was about deciding what kind of hero he wanted to become.

HBO Max’s Inside Episode 8 featurette goes behind the Lanterns Season 1 finale, “Dirt and Stars,” as the mystery surrounding Hal Jordan’s death finally comes together. John discovers the truth about Sheriff Kerry Kane, Noah’s connection to the Manhunters and the fear that has shaped almost everyone involved — but instead of simply following the rules, he chooses compassion and his own judgement.

That decision carries directly into the episode’s biggest moment. John takes the lantern forged by Sinestro, despite the fear energy running through it, and rewrites the traditional Green Lantern oath to reflect everything he has learned. Rather than pretending fear can be eliminated, he chooses to acknowledge it and still do what is right.

The finale also gives Kyle Chandler’s Hal one last meaningful moment with John through the Halogram, finally telling his former trainee that he is ready to take over. It turns what began as a murder investigation into a genuine passing of the torch.

By the end, John Stewart isn’t simply replacing Hal Jordan. He has created his own version of what a Green Lantern can be — setting up a very different future for Aaron Pierre’s hero in the wider DC Universe.

Lanterns Season 1 is streaming now on HBO Max.
