Who says animated superhero movies can't be terrifying? DC is celebrating Halloween with a chilling new compilation titled Scenes That Were Pure Nightmare Fuel, bringing together some of the most disturbing moments from its extensive collection of animated films.

Running for more than 25 minutes, the official video explores the darker side of the DC Universe, where familiar superheroes face nightmarish enemies, horrific transformations and threats that go far beyond conventional comic book action.

While Batman, Superman and the Justice League are usually associated with heroic adventures, their animated stories have frequently ventured into psychological horror, supernatural mysteries and surprisingly mature territory.

Films such as Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker demonstrate how deeply unsettling Gotham's criminal underworld can become, particularly when the Joker's cruelty takes centre stage.

Meanwhile, Justice League Dark: Apokolips War pushes superhero storytelling into considerably more brutal territory, depicting devastating battles and the horrifying consequences of Darkseid's invasion.

Other DC animated productions, including Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox and Constantine: City of Demons, have also explored darker themes involving alternate realities, demonic forces and disturbing moral choices.

These examples highlight the franchise's willingness to combine comic book mythology with elements traditionally associated with horror cinema.

Released for Halloween, DC's new compilation celebrates that unsettling creative tradition, reminding audiences that animated adventures aren't necessarily designed for younger viewers.

From monstrous villains to devastating superhero encounters, DC's animated universe has delivered more than its fair share of nightmare-inducing moments.
