The Gallerist Trailer: Natalie Portman and Jenna Ortega Turn Death into Art

The past refuses to stay buried in Unaccustomed Earth, Netflix's new family drama starring Freida Pinto and Siddharth. The official trailer introduces a close-knit Bengali American community where old relationships threaten carefully maintained lives.

Pinto plays Parul Chaudhury, a wife and mother who returns to Cambridge, Massachusetts, after five years in Mumbai. Following a life-changing cancer diagnosis, she is determined to reconsider the choices that shaped her future. Among them is Amit Mukherjee (Siddharth), her college sweetheart, whom she gave up to honour her father's wishes.

Their reunion stirs feelings that neither has entirely left behind. Yet the consequences stretch beyond the pair: Parul's husband Jai (Indraneil Sengupta), Amit's sister Ruma (Sarayu Blue) and their wider circle are connected by decades of family history, friendship and expectation.

Inspired by Jhumpa Lahiri's acclaimed 2008 short-story collection, the eight-part series reshapes separate narratives into an interconnected drama about love, loyalty, identity and belonging. Madhuri Shekar (3 Body Problem) serves as showrunner and writer, while Ritesh Batra (The Lunchbox) directs the opening two episodes. Lahiri is also an executive producer.

Rather than presenting the romance in isolation, the trailer suggests how one woman's attempt to reclaim her life could unsettle an entire community. The result promises a character-driven exploration of the tension between personal desire and family obligation.

Unaccustomed Earth premieres on Netflix on 17 December 2026, with all eight episodes arriving together.
