Maleficent's Story Revealed: Disney Revisits the Mistress of Evil
Disney revisits Angelina Jolie's Maleficent in A Villain's Saga, exploring the betrayal, heartbreak and extraordinary transformation that shaped one of its most iconic villains.
Every villain has a story, and few are as complicated as Maleficent's. Disney revisits the journey of one of its most recognisable characters in Maleficent's Story Revealed, a retrospective celebrating the dark fairy's transformation from feared villain to unexpected protector.
Originally introduced in Disney's 1959 animated classic Sleeping Beauty, Maleficent became famous for placing a terrible curse on Princess Aurora. However, the 2014 live-action film Maleficent offered a dramatically different perspective on her motivations.
Portrayed by Angelina Jolie, the character begins as a powerful fairy who protects the magical Moors. Betrayed by someone she once trusted, she becomes consumed by anger and revenge, ultimately cursing the infant daughter of the man responsible for her suffering.
Yet her relationship with Aurora, played by Elle Fanning, gradually changes everything. What begins as an act of vengeance develops into a profound emotional connection, challenging the traditional distinction between heroes and villains.
The story continues in Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019), directed by Joachim Rønning, as Aurora prepares to marry Prince Phillip.
Their relationship faces another test when Queen Ingrith (Michelle Pfeiffer) attempts to turn humans and magical creatures against each other.
Meanwhile, Maleficent discovers more about her origins and her connection to the mysterious Dark Fey.
Together, the films explore betrayal, prejudice, motherhood and redemption, transforming a classic fairy-tale antagonist into a character whose greatest strength may ultimately be her capacity for love.
Disney's A Villain's Saga offers another opportunity to revisit the extraordinary story behind the Mistress of Evil.
