Maria Bamford has spent decades finding punchlines in places most comedians wouldn’t dare go.
Directed by Judd Apatow and Neil Berkeley, Paralyzed by Hope: The Maria Bamford Story traces her journey from childhood in Duluth, Minnesota, through her rise in stand-up while exploring the mental health struggles and complicated family relationships that became inseparable from her work. The filmmakers also followed Bamford’s present-day life for almost four years, mixing intimate footage with clips from her career and appearances from fellow comedians who admire her singular voice.
The result looks appropriately difficult to categorise: funny, uncomfortable and deeply personal, much like Bamford herself on stage. Paralyzed by Hope: The Maria Bamford Story premieres on Netflix October 23, 2026.
